some sketches, old stuff

these are crap photos, but I'll put up decent scans evetually. I'm in the middle of some freelance and promotional work. :D potentially getting a coffee job. or any job would be good. but coffee smells the best. maybe bread too. just food things in general are my vice.

Anyway, I feel like this is the busiest week before school ever! :D

updating again, slowly [LONG POST]

I disappeared from the blog for awhile and it's just been a crazy time these past 3 weeks getting things in gear. I am in a lot of process work and some finishing touches on things are going to happen by this weekend.

So far, I really enjoy Nancy Mitter's Advanced Portraiture class and working with oil paints. I also found out I am allergic (WebMD diagnosis is some dermatitis, possibly pompholyx, also known as hand eczema, not contagious, just painfully itchy) to something in either oil paints or the solvents I was using with them. Perhaps it was the laundry soap I used to clean my brushes (it IS a skin and eye irritant). After 3 weeks, my fingers have peeled most of the dry skin and it is just really tender to use my hands without moisturizer. So now I use gloves and wear sleeve covers my granny made for me years ago. They look like this:
Yes, I am now an old granny. I also have small, stubby kid hands. The look of a real artist!

My 1st in-class oil painting is my 1st oil painting in general. I would say I like oil painting so far. OK, I like it a lot* more than acrylic. But both have their merits.

*picture Chuck in Tech I saying "I like it! I like it a lot!" while you're painting... I guarantee smiles, man! :D

I learned a lot from just diving right into it with a light burnt sienna/burnt umber underpainting (grisaille is the classic term for the underpainting method, and you can do a lot with just a flat or filbert brush and a cloth) and massing/blocking in the colors.
Building up from dark to light, the trick is to add in the fuller colors and subdue them while they are wet (and avoid overblending, where you start getting gray or too muted). Also working with more than just paint thinner is suggested (I did my in-class painting in paint and turpenoid), as you can apply paint over drier paint faster in a painting medium (currently, I am trying Galkyd Lite and Liquin) and lay in opaques over the transparent, "fat over lean".

I'm still trying to get more fatty with my paint application. I tend to do a lot of dry brushing to gain control, thinking that it's like acrylics (oy vey, stupid).
Nancy loves using colors and experimenting with her palette, so my piece is a bit too quiet compared to the color she wants me to explore. I tend to stay more on the value side and don't have any experience with color theory so this is really exciting to go more saturated.
I also enjoy the smell of linseed oil and I do plan to try to paint with it.

Out of class, I'm doing 6 portraits of friends for homework; I've been close to finish with one, have done a pencil drawing for another, and have some studies in the works:
The almost completed one of Ellen Coons is looking sweet (her birthday is coming up, so this is doubles as a gift). I had some fun with painting with a model; from life, coloring is just more vibrant. I have some places to fix here and there but roughly 8 hours in, this is good. You can see how thin I apply paint and it's a learning curve for me to be more liberal with something so expensive.

I have more process work for Illus Tech II, Image Making 1, and some roughs for 3pt perspective currently being done, so I'll post those later (the past 2-3 weeks I've been gathering supplies and getting references for things).

On a side note, living with roommates is fun until most of you get sick around the same time. :(
this past weekend, I was down for the count from Friday night into most of Sunday night with this feverish coughy phlegm thing and couldn't get anything done.
This weekend was sleeping through fevers, hot lemon water with lots of honey, Batman: Gotham Knight & Leaving Las Vegas, these magazine clippings of a cat owner (dreamboat!) and a dog in a top hat and bow.

Did I mention Nicholas Cage is a prickly pear?

painting completed!

This was a really good experience for me as the summer ends, as a callback to more serious, finished artwork. Also feels good to get frustrated with it, as I did this whole week. Chrome is hard to paint (lighting it is also evil). Also tried to be more "stylized" in this piece since he asked for a classic pin-up inspired girl... but with some attitude. I still need to work the attitude part, I need to draw more expressions, get loose with exaggerations (anatomy needs to be either tighter or looser). The pose is also slightly weird, as in, not naturally weighted- perspective is off on the body as well as the shoe, even though you can sit on your hand in that position, its not really relaxed/sexy (note to self: examine what makes something sexy)...... there are a lot of things wrong with this piece. BASICALLY SOME LEARNING HAPPENED HERE.

Overall, my eyes and hands are tired, crampy, etc.... it feels good!

It goes in the mail today, hopefully my friend will like it.

still working on the painting...

Here are the progress shots from today! If I put my mind to it, I can get this done by Monday. I fudged the skin a bit somehow and I'm still searching for the best grill to base my design off of. So far, it is a great experience to try to do classic cheesecake with a little twist. Right now, the trace looks a ton better than the painting but I think I always reach a point in the middle where I hate something. Doesn't everyone?

Also I figured out how to use ustream and I did a broadcast today while I was painting. I will be broadcasting briefly tomorrow evening after 7pm. Catch it here: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/magicdanish

painting for a friend

I only have a shot of the rough on trace paper.... but this is going to be awesome. As mentioned in a previous post, I am doing a psychobilly themed pinup for a friend of mine. It took lots of tries to get the roughs to look right, and its not the last one I'll be doing by a long shot. I also did several poses for this idea, but it wasn't getting that "tough cookie" look I needed. Drawing sexy ladies is hard, as I struggle with more stylized linework (I tend to go for super representational, gritty stuff). It still bothers me how unrealistic the curves and limb lengths are... but pinups are exaggerated.
I also need better refs for hot rods and classic cars.... change the hair..... fix a lot of stuff.

Psychobilly is a combination of punk, rockabilly, and some others... (visually) highly influenced by punk/goth culture and Betty Page.

just a preview...

The first rough of many portraits of friends for practice/ project prep (I'm thinking of working on a painting series).
Still working on the psychobilly pinup for my friend. Most pinups are stylized, so I'm having issues capturing the "sexy" when I tend to go for darker, gritty work.

I am also seeking a model for 2-3 hour drawing sessions... this is sort of hard when you live in a somewhat rural area and don't have a car. :C

Watching some shows on Hulu... Green Wing is just great along with Black Books featuring Tamsin Greig! My favorite doctor on Green Wing is Alan (Mark Heap)- he's like a middle-aged, sexually repressed Beaker (The Muppets).

In other news, biking is great exercise and I plan to do plenty of it when I get back to the D. :D

Hey I'm updating (sort of)

Sorry, I took an unexpected artblogging hiatus. Been thinking through some stuff and went on a family road trip.
I have some projects in the works, but I don't have any photos yet. I am also learning how to ride a bike! :D Hopefully getting my license before school starts again.

Well, here's a doodle i did for fun a week ago. I am actually working on a birthday piece for a psychobilly music lovin' friend of mine. Gathering refs from Betty Page and etc.

Currently making mix cds for 3-4 people... and if you're interested, you can check out what my music tastes are like on my podcast, ONIGIRI SPECIAL.

still working on papercraft and etc

I am working on this Howl's Moving Castle papercraft and it is nearly done. My entry for Jerk and Draw is now going to be late. :CCCCCCCCCCCCCC

You will see some roughs and etc by the end of the night. Fighting Chuck E. Cheese and a Russian Juggling Bear awaits.

Also purchased art books at a book sale. I LOVE BOOKS.

Keep evolving.

It is now the end of freshman year at CCS and I have much to do to become an illustrator. The biggest challenger I face is myself- for the next 2 months, and forever after that. I have learned a great deal from the people I have met.

I am slowly packing away my life at CCS and it is very sentimental. The immense freedom I have to become myself personally and professionally has been summed up in this statement:

"In life, you are not discovering yourself as much as you are making yourself."*

and with that, I have a few photos to show my progress.

*this is paraphrased from this quotation:
“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself."

in progress

This is just some stuff in Drawing II I am working on... I have to get cracking on my painting too and plan to get mostly done by next week.

In other news, I am considering working on campus during the summer as an New Student Orientation Leader? I just hope I can get some faculty/staff recommendations.
I have been reading up The Art of Osamu Tezuka by Helen McCarthy and it is fascinating; he was really styling! :D
Check out those Ray-Bans!
Lastly, I plan to get through this scholarly attempt at analyzing Batman. Then I will move onto reading all of Blade of the Immortal by Hiroaki Samura (23+ volumes ongoing!). I am on vol. 7.

hey its spring brake

Hey folks! I have enjoyed most of my spring break. Now is the time to buckle down. Mostly.
Here are some sketches to show that I'm not wasting my time completely. These are obviously from a couple weeks ago but so be it. I am working on another one currently and Prismacolor Col-Erase pencils are great to work with. Some quick sketches and very delicate details in pretty colors!
